London City Guide #2: the denim and fashion shops

Take time out from the London edition of Denim Premiere Vision to explore the stores of Shoreditch! London journalist Oliver Horton presents five essential shops a few steps from next edition’s venue, the Old Truman Brewery.

Son of a Stag

Exemplar of the vintage denim movement and a must-see despite that trend’s waning influence, Son of a Stag specializes in rare, high-end jeans and workwear.  Japanese purist brands, such as Full Count and Buzz Rickson’s, share space with Merz b. Schwanen organic cotton sweatshirts and the inevitable Red Wing boots. Son of a Stag ceo Rudy Budhdeo is a true blue visionary, and his store shows denim at its most earnest and refined. When visiting Draywalk, the little parade that is home to Son of a Stag, look in at the contemporary stores here, such as Number Six.

Blackhorse Lane Ateliers

These jeans are made in London! The Walthamstow-based craft jeans maker, established in 2016 by textiles veteran Bilgehan “Han” Ates, opened its denim concept shop in Shoreditch earlier this year. The store sells ready-to-go jeans and denim work jackets, but also offers a made-to-measure service: since the factory is located just a few miles north the finished product can be ready in a couple of days. Also contains “London’s first denim haberdashery”, everything the Average Joe and Joanne need to make or repair their own denims. More tailored than your average pair, Blackhorse Lane jeans are made with respect for heritage and quality.

Boxpark

For those unfamiliar with the concept, Boxpark is a mini-mall made of shipping containers. Tenants are local or developing brands and retailers, or concept stores for more established names – go upstairs for fun places to eat and sup. The concept is so popular it spawned a second edition in Croydon, with a third due to open near Wembley Stadium in December 2018. Check out The Brokedown Palace for outdoor gear presented fashionably. Across the road from Boxpark is networking club Shoreditch House, and beyond that Redchurch Street, home to monobrand stores by APC, Sunspel and Tracey Neuls.

Goodhood

A lovely store, Goodhood could be described as a smaller, more democratic Dover Street Market. Founded in 2008 by former Levi’s designers, the store relocated to this 280-square-metre, two-story space in 2015 – café in the basement. Brands include Dickies, Stan Ray, Stussy, Champion and YMC. On nearby Shoreditch High Street, drop in to Present, which offers menswear from Stone Island, Vetra and White Mountaineering, plus accessories and magazines.

Sneakersnstuff

A love for denim often comes with a love for sneaks. Sneakersnstuff is a speciality shop that sells fashion-friendly sports shoes with an emphasis on classics, collab’s and rarities. Nike, Adidas, Mizuno and Saucony are among the suppliers siphoning off specials to this Swedish import. The concept originated in Stockholm in 1999 and the Shoreditch store, which opened in 2014, was the first location outside Scandinavia.
